The maximum distance permissible for a DMX signal is 300m. If you need longer distances, DMX Splitters are required, such as a Pharos RDM. DMX lines should always be terminated with a DMX terminator. This adds a 120 ohm resistor between the data pins, and prevents reflections of the data back down the line.

1 DMX universe contains a maximum of 512 DMX channels. A normal RGB 1-pixel fixture uses 3 color channels to mix all other colors. These color channels are Red, Green, and Blue. At the same time this means that such a fixture usually requires 3 control channels (one control channel for each color channel).

DMX cables are available in both 3-pin and 5-pin configurations. Both versions are AES/EBU compatible and utilize 110-ohm signals for professional audio cable performance.

With all that said though there isn't a real difference between 3 and 5 pin DMX. The second Data line doesn't add any additional data or bandwidth, nor is it required to making moving lights move correctly. You can even convert a 5-pin cable to a 3-pin cable, and a 3-pin cable to a 5-pin without a problem.

You can use a hardware sequencer or software on your computer, iPad, phone, or any other device using a USB to MIDI interface. If you're using a tablet, you'll likely need a USB adapter to be able to connect to the USB to MIDI interface, such as a Lightning to USB cable for an iPad.

SPI stands for Serial Peripheral Interface and basically it allows you to transfer any kind of data. The SPI protocol is typically used to control addressable (or pixel) LED strips, because it allows transfer of more than 512 values. Typical SPI protocol used for addressable LED strips can control even 1000 individual RGB LED pixels.

Sometimes, the DMX is used instead of SPI to control pixel LEDs. If you would want to use DMX instead of SPI, you would need at least 6 DMX universes. Why 6? If you want to control 1000 RGB LED pixels, that’s total of 1000*3=3000 channels.

One DMX universe can control up to 512 channels, thus you need 3000/512=5.85 (round to 6) DMX universes.

SPI and DMX-controlled LED light strips both can deliver dynamic lighting effects of all sorts. In light of time efficiency, on-site engineers are likely to go with the protocol they are most experienced with because spending extra time on training and getting familiar with something new is time-consuming and delays project delivery.

It should be clear that DMX is actually a communication signal which is used to communicate with LED strips.

Its only purpose is to communicate and not to supply power for LED strip lights.

For dmx512 led strip light, normally their input voltage is only DC24V, so we need to add a transformer or driver to change the high voltage 220V or 110V into DC24V.

If you haven’t already done so, you’ll need to install the MADRIX software on your PC.

a. Install the MADRIX NEO software on your personal computer. The software installation is like any other installation you’ve done. Just follow the instructions when the program executes and read each page closely.

b. Once the software installation is complete, connect the MADRIX NEO interface into the USB slot of your PC. Locate the MADRIX program recently installed on your computer and open it.

c. So far, so good? Let us continue with the MADRIX software interface.

d. Click on the tab labled “Preferences” – you should find it at the top of the program.Then click on “Matrix Generator”; another window will open. Under the “Placement” text-field you will see 3 axis section under the “Count XYZ”.

e. Set the X axis to 120, and the Y and Z axis to 1 in the “Placement” section.

f. Above the “Placement” section, you will see the word “Fixture”. Set your fixture to “generic RGB light 1 Pixel”. Click apply and OK. Wasn’t too difficult, now, was it? After those settings have been changed, your DMX RGB LED Strip is set to fit with the MADRIX NEO Software.

Making the connection:

a. Cut off the connector at the end of the power supply and expose the copper wires. Be careful not to cut the part that you connect to an outlet. Afterwards, grab the wire with the white lettering on the power supply, and make note somewhere; this will be your positive lead. (make sure there is no power running)

b. Connect your positive lead to the red strip at the end of your LED strip, and your negative lead with the black wire. Be sure to have one power supply per end of the strip. Your power is now setup.

c. Connect the 3-to-5 pin adapter to the NEO DMX interface output to your DMX LED Strip.

d. Turn on the power supply.
