Features of WS2813 & SK6813 5V LED Strips
Individually addressable
Control the color and brightness of each LED independently to create chasing effects, smooth gradients and animated patterns. Choose from 30, 60, 96 or 144 LEDs per meter to match the pixel spacing and detail your design needs.
Backup Data Transmission
A main data line and a backup data line help maintain signal continuity. If an individual pixel’s data output fails, the backup path allows downstream pixels to keep receiving a signal, provided the power and backup connections remain intact.
RGB & RGBW Options
WS2813 strips are available in RGB and RGBW, while SK6813 5V strips offer RGB. Choose RGB for colorful lighting effects, or WS2813 RGBW for a dedicated white channel that operates independently of the RGB colors.

FAQS
The data transfer protocol use single NZR communication mode. After the pixelp ower-on reset, the DIN port receive data from controller, the first pixel collect initial 24bit data then sent to the internal data latch, the other data which reshaping by the internal signal reshaping amplification circuit sent to the next cascade pixel through the DO port. After transmission for each pixel, the signal to reduce 24bit. Every pixel adopts auto-reshaping transmit technology, making the pixel cascade numbers are not limited to the signal transmission, only relate to the speed of signal transmission.
The BIN receives the data signal, and then compare the data with the DIN side after phagocytosis of 24bit data, if DIN do NOT receive the signal, then switching to BIN for receiving the input signal, which ensure that any the IC's damage doesnot affect the signal cascade transmission and make the BIN in state of receiving signal until restart after power-off. Refresh Frequency updates to 2KHz, Low Frame Frequency and no Flicker appear in HD Video Camera.
250us or more of reset time, it won’t cause wrong reset while interruption,it supports the lower frequency and in expensive MCU.
There’s in a choice of 18mA or 5mA current version, and also in a choice of high brightness or cost-effective version. That is to say, WS2813 is provided with four versions.
ws2813 led strip is better.
ws2813 led strip can be regarded as an updated version of ws2812 led strip, it enjoys all function of what ws2812 led strip has.
At the same time, WS2813 LED strip is designed with one data wire and one backup data wire. Signal break-point continuous transmission. If one LED is damaged, the following LEDs can still work.
Also, there are both rgb ws2813 led strip and rgbw ws2813 led strip available, while ws2812 led strip only has rgb version.
At last, another advantage of ws2813 over ws2812 is faster refresh rate reaching 2000Hz, while ws2812 has lower frequency at 400 Hz. This means that ws2813 produces excellent flicker-free display effects that can be captured on HD cameras.
Yes, for both WS2812B and WS2813 the same microcontroller can be used.
Are you just starting to work with LED strips? Note that they do not start to light up when they are only connected to the power supply. Unlike standard passive LEDs, making them start to light is more complicated. The bar must be connected to the controller, through which a command should be sent to the LEDs. These can be for example Arduinoand Raspberry Pi. Controller"notifies" each single LED to have color and brightness using any program installed in it.
The LEDs of the WS2812B bar have a built-in chip, which allows them to communicate using only one cable. This means that a large number of LEDs can be controlled by a single pin on the controller. The LED strips have 3 pins: power supply (+5 V), grounding (GND) and data pin (Din and Dout). Power and ground pins are used to power the bar and the data pin should be connected to the controller (e.g. Raspberry Pi or Arduino).
It should not be a problem to control bars that require a 5V power supply via the 5-volt Arduino output . But if you decide to control the LED bar using RaspberryPi or ESP8266 , which sends signals at 3.3V, you should convert the 3.3-volt data signal to a 5-volt signal using a Logical Level Converter.
Yes, you need libraries to control WS2812B and WS2813 and create unusual lighting effects. Libraries should differ depending on the controller used. They can be downloaded from GitHub.
a. For Arduino and ESP8266: FastLED, Adafruit_NeoPixel , or WS2812FXlibrary.
b. For Raspberry Pi: Python library rpi_ws281x
From the FastLED library, you can control WS2813 LED Strips.
Use the type “WS2812” and set the LED strip by specifying the DATA PIN.
The LED strip’s DIN (data input) pin goes to Arduino PIN 6 with an optional 470 in between resistors.
+ 5V of the LED stripe goes to + 5V of additional power.
GND of the LED strip goes to GND of the additional power supply and to Arduino’s GND.
Now connect the strip’s BOTH center pins to this pin and the stripe should work.
This is a simple introduction that how one can control WS2813 with the use of Arduino.
Remember that you might be able to get your WS2813 to function without any level conversion, but it really assured because the data line needs to be at least 0.7*VDD (5 volts), or around 3.5 volts.
The diode method is a simple way to slightly reduce the voltage of the power supply so that WS2813 can read the 3.3V output of the Pi.
However, you need to be careful to use a diode that can accommodate all the WS2813 drawn current.
The Adafruit diodes sell only manage 1 Amp of the continuous current so they are perfect for driving up to about 16 of them at maximum 100% bright white-and about 50 WS2813 if they are all illuminated with different colors.
Also, because the LED WS2813 doesn’t operate at 5 volts they may be a little dimmer than usual.
A level converter chip like the 74AHCT125 is a better process, as it converts the Pi’s 3.3V output to 5V without limiting the WS2813 power.
To work, WS2813 must be linked to GPIO10, GPIO12, GPIO18, or GPIO21! The basic pin is GPIO18.
Be careful that you can produce only one stripe at a time!
If you have more than one, connect them together and then wire them over a single connection to your Raspberry Pi.
The following wiring diagrams can be used to link your WS2813 to your Raspberry Pi.
It is very easy to wire WS2813 LED to work with a Raspberry Pi.
The only challenge to tackle is translating the GPIO from 3.3V to around 5V for the WS2813 to read.
You can do this level conversion in two ways, either with a basic 1N4001 power diode or with a level converter chip like the 74AHCT125.
WS2813 LED can work with slightly higher voltages.
This depends on the additional support components around the chip, based on the space, costs and most likely application available.
For guidance on acceptable voltage limits for each type please refer to the specific product description page.
Aim for 5 Volts when in doubt.
Lower voltages are always acceptable, with the suggestion that the LEDs are dimming a little bit.
There’s a limit below which the LED won’t light up, or start showing the wrong color.
Every single WS2813 draws up to 60 milliamps white (red + green + blue) at maximum brightness.
However, it is rare for all pixels to be turned on this way, in actual use.
The current draw will be much fewer when mixing colors and displaying animations.
For all circumstances, it is impossible to estimate a single number, but we used 1/3 of this (20 mA per pixel) as a gross rule of thumb with no ill effects.
But if you know for a fact that at maximum brightness, you need every pixel on, use the full 60 mA figure.
To estimate power supply needs, multiply the number of pixels by 20, then divide the result by 1000 in Amps for the power supply rating rule of thumb.
The WS2813 Integrated Light Source is the latest advance in the search for a fast, portable, and affordable full-color LED.
Red, green, and blue LEDs are integrated into a small surface-mount package operated by a single cable, alongside a driver chip.
The first switch on the power supply, let the voltage stabilize, then link the pixels (first with GND).
Through individual WS2813 draws up to 60 milliamps white (red + green + blue) at maximum brightness.
However, it is uncommon for all pixels to be switched in this way, in actual use.
The maximum length depends on the power supply and data transmission capabilities. Generally, it is recommended to limit the strip to 5 meters without additional signal boosters or power injection.
Yes, you can program custom lighting effects, animations, and color changes using compatible microcontrollers and software libraries, allowing for endless creativity.
Yes, WS2813 strips can be connected in series, but keep in mind the voltage drop over long distances. It may be necessary to inject power at intervals for longer runs.
WS2813 LED strips operate at 5V, making them similar to WS2812B strips in terms of power requirements. They are easily powered by microcontrollers and small 5V power supplies.
The dual-signal wire provides redundancy. If one LED fails or a connection issue occurs, the strip will continue functioning, ensuring higher reliability in installations where failures could otherwise disrupt the entire strip.
Yes, you can connect multiple strips, but voltage drop may occur over long runs. Additional power injection at regular intervals will help maintain consistent brightness across the entire length.
Waterproof versions of WS2813 strips are available, with IP65 or higher ratings for protection against water, dust, and moisture, making them suitable for outdoor use or in wet environments.
WS2813 LED strips are easy to install. They typically come with adhesive backing for mounting on most surfaces. For larger installations, mounting clips or brackets may be used for additional support.
WS2813 operates at 5V and features dual-signal lines for added reliability, while WS2815 operates at 12V and also has a dual-signal line system. WS2815 is better for longer runs due to less voltage drop compared to WS2813.
Voltage drop occurs over long runs of LED strips, resulting in reduced brightness at the end of the strip. To prevent this, inject power at regular intervals or use shorter strips to maintain consistent brightness.
